SHILLONG: Officials of the district administration and Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) inspected the wholesale farmers market (Iew dielang) on Sunday.
The inspection came in the wake of a meeting to discuss the farmers’ plight. The KHADC MDCs, led by CEM KHADC Titos Chyne, met the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in the second week of May with an appeal to allow the reopening of the wholesale market (Iew Dielang) at Khlieh Iew as the farmers are struggling. In a statement issued here on Sunday, EC member of the KHADC and Jaiaw MDC, Paul Lyngdoh, cited the statement of West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang asking for partial reopening of Iewduh for the benefit of many.
In this connection, Lyngdoh said that the EC took up the matter two weeks ago and made the plea to the state government.
Lyngdoh said that the meeting held with Tynsong was attended by top officials of the district administration, including the DC, SP and Health department officials.
“It is absurd, therefore, that a single individual’s utterances of a few lines in the Assembly can be projected over the efforts made by a constitutional authority in a sustained and concerted manner”, Lyngdoh said.
It may be mentioned that Chyne had urged the state government to allow only the opening of wholesale market (Iew Dielang) at Khlieh Iew and assured the government that they will maintain protocol and bring in limited and identified traders.
Chyne had said that farmers need not bring all their produce, which can be collected from their respective places and transported to Iew Dielang.
