MLAs’ salary
deduction
With regard to the deduction in salaries of the MLAs to fight the pandemic, Sawkmie said that the MLAs have already contributed 10 per cent of the salary although they would want to do more.
With Congress MLA giving away half of his salary to tackle the pandemic, Sawkmie said that it all depends individually as there are many more things to be done in the constituency also.
“There are other developmental activities and, at the same time, Mawlai is a huge constituency and then there are others from outside the constituency also,” Sawkmie said.
When contacted, another MLA, on anonymity, said that the prior to the decision of the Nongthymmai MLA to deduct 50 per cent of his salary, the Speaker of the Assembly had already issued the order with regard to the deduction in the salary of the MLAs. “Now what does the Speaker decide, it would be his discretion,” the MLA said.
