SHILLONG: The Executive Member of KHADC Martle Mukhim has urged the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to address the grievances of the farmers of the state.
In a letter to the chief minister, he said the farmers are facing unaccounted problems and losses arising out of the implementation of preventive measures due to coronavirus.
Mukhim said during a tour on Thursday to Mawber village of Thynroit area falling within Mawkynrew & Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills district, he was informed by the elders and villagers of the area, including Jongksha and Smit that they could not reap the harvest of plantations like cabbage, tomato, cauliflowers, potatoes and others which are perishable products.
He said due to non-availability of marketing facilities and demarcated places to sell, the farmers are facing difficulties.
“The people planted and harvested the plantations with hard toil and high hope, but with this present situation it becomes difficult for them to market their produce which needs immediate attention and intervention of the government and other relevant agencies”, he said.
There is a need to have alternative method to procure and sell vegetables for the best interest of the farmers in the state, Mukhim added.
