SHILLONG: It took one distress call to get Michael Kharsyntiew going and voila, the kilometre-long road to an orphanage in Puriang, East Khasi Hills was restored to its past! There was no locking him down.
The recent cyclone had damaged and cut off the road. Kharsyntiew visited ‘Ki Mawlynnai ka Jingim Children’s Home’ orphanage in Puriang after receiving the distress call about the road leading to it being damaged by the heavy rain.
Kharsyntiew had help, though.
On a very short notice, he and his friends teamed up with Ryntih Sports Club football team and Seng Samla Upper Lansonalane who volunteered to help.
“Though none of us are engineers or road contractors yet we gave our best and 38 of us wholeheartedly laboured to somehow salvage the situation since their home has been completely cut off from the main road due to incessant rain and mud slide,” Kharsyntiew said.
Impressed and thankful for the noble deed of the group, the children of the home at the end sang heart-touching songs for them—paeans, really.
Lockdowns don’t matter to good Samaritans, and none need feel orphaned.
