PANAJI: Celebrated IPS officer and former Governor of Jharkhand, Mizoram and Manipur, Ved Marwah, who passed away in Goa late on Friday, was cremated with full state honours in the coastal state on Saturday.

Ex-Delhi Police commissioner Marwah, 87, who was also the former Director General of National Security Guard, died at a North Goa hospital following a brief illness. Originally from Delhi, Marwah would regularly travel to Goa, where he also had a home.

In a message mourning the demise of the former top cop, Goa Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh said: “We are deeply saddened at the loss of a great leader of the police force. Ved Marwah led the force from the front through difficult times and served as a Governor to three states. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

“Paid final tributes to Ved Marwah, IPS, former Governor of Jharkhand, Manipur and Mizoram and also former Commissioner of Delhi Police. His services and contribution to the nation will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant tweeted.

In his message, the IGP also said that Marwah was a dynamic and honest personality, who was extremely sensitive to the public and was a cop with a heart.

“Ved Marwah was like a rock that weathered many storms. In the aftermath of the 1984 riots, he led Delhi Police through some of their most testing times. His integrity and dedication was unparalleled, which helped in crucial assignments as Advisor to the JK Government and later as Governor to three states,” Singh said.

“Never a man to rest, he remained active in the public domain till the very last days and was a guiding light to all the officers who looked to him for guidance. His loss is a loss to the nation,” the IGP added.
