6 Assam districts remain hit by floods

GUWAHATI: Parts of six districts in Assam continue to be submerged with a population of nearly 60,000 still affected in the first wave of floods in the state.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin on Sunday evening informed that 103 villages under nine revenue circles in Goalpara, Nagaon, Hojai, Cachar, Dhemaji and West Karbi Anglong districts remain impacted by the deluge.

Goalpara remains the worst hit with over 40,000 people in 30 villages of Balijana, Lakhipur and Matia revenue circles still coping with the floodwaters while about 13,000-odd residents of 21 villages in Hojai have been affected.

Currently, 1727 persons, including 334 children, are sheltered in 11 relief camps in Goalpara and Cachar districts.

There was no casualty reported from any district on Sunday. The death toll in the first wave of floods in the state stands at 10.

Breaches in embankments were reported from Biswanath district, erosion in Lakhimpur district while three roads were submerged/affected in Barpeta district.

Meanwhile, two houses were partially damaged in a rain-triggered landslide in a village under Mankachar revenue circle in South Salmara district, the ASDMA report said.

However, no casualty or injury to any person was reported.
