OIL CMD assures to put out Baghjan fire in 21 days

GUWAHATI: The Oil India Limited (OIL) has assured Assam government that the raging fire at the well site in Baghjan will be doused in 21 days and bravery awards will be given to the two firemen of the OIL who lost their lives in the fire on Tuesday.

The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the OIL gave these assurances in  a meeting with Assam’s Industries and Commerce Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary who had gone to Baghjan on a stock-taking visit today. The meeting was held in presence of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Tinsukia.

“The OIL CMD assured Minister Patowary that the fire at the well site will be doused within 21 days. The CMD also informed the Minister that the two firemen of OIL who lost their lives would be posthumously given bravery award by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. Oil India will give Rs. one crore to Tikheswar Gohain’s family and Rs. 60 lakhs to the family of Durlov Gogoi based on their years of service at Oil India. Both the families would receive pension and other financial benefits. One eligible member from each family would be given a job in Oil India,” an official communiqué informed on Wednesday night.

Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary visited Baghjan  well fire site on Wednesday to personally took stock of  damaged caused to the people of the area by the fire. He held a series of meetings with the Tinsukia district administration, CMD and other top officials of Oil India Limited, oil field experts and representatives of various local organizations at Tinsukia.

The Minister discussed in detail the Baghjan fire incident and action plan for controlling the situation. In the course of discussion, it was decided to give Rs. 30,000 as initial, partial compensation and immediate relief to each family of the people who were displaced from their homes and are living in the relief camps. The Minister instructed that the money would be deposited immediately. The amount will be deposited by Oil India to the bank account of the district administration today and subsequently will be disbursed to the affected families..

The DC, Tinsukia will make an assessment of the loss of property of villagers following the OIL gas well fire at Baghjan  at the oil well. After the assessment, the amount of compensation will be paid by OIL Seven thousands affected people have been lodged in 12 relief camps.
