Timber-laden truck seized at Byrnihat, 2 nabbed

GUWAHATI: An illegal timber-laden truck was seized and two persons apprehended from the 15th Mile area at Byrnihat on Thursday afternoon, official sources here said.

A statement issued by Assam Police here informed that based on secret information, the truck bearing registration number ML-06-9516 was intercepted around 1.30 pm along the Assam-Meghalaya border and seized for illegal transportation of timber.

“Two persons, namely Mahesh Nath (60) and Baba Nongbri (40) have been apprehended,” it said.

In this regard a case (number 771/2020 under sections 468/471/420 IPC R/W Section 41 of Assam Forest Regulation Act) has been registered at Basistha police station.

“Further measures are in place to unearth if a nexus exists and all those involved in such illegal transportation and sale of timber. Investigation is on,” the statement added.
