SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union, Laban Circle, staged protest in front of the residence of local MLA Sanbor Shullai against the change of name of Zigzag Road to Ardhendhu Chaudhuri Road.

The Cabinet in February last year had approved the change of name of the road. The decision of the state Cabinet was based on the 24 recommendations of the Meghalaya State Names Authorities Committee.

The Zigzag Road in Rilbong has been named after former MLA Ardhendu Chaudhuri who was an NCP MLA when Purno Sangma was the Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

The Zigzag road extends from the Dorbar shnong of Kenches Trace to Oxford-Rilbong.

The KSU Laban Circle shouted slogans in front of the Shullai and carried flex and placards on Saturday to demand the renaming of the road to the late politician from Nongstoin.

While the union members were protesting a group of headmen were also present to attend a meeting called by Shullai which was later called off.

The headmen resented the manner in which Shullai cancelled the meeting without prior information to them.

It may be mentioned that late Chaudhuri who was the MLA of Mawprem constituency, died in a helicopter crash in 2004.
