SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union Laban Circle agitated in front of the residence of local MLA Sanbor Shullai on Saturday in protest against the change of name of Zig Zag Road to Ardhendhu Chaudhuri Road.
However, according to an official record, the state Cabinet in February last year had approved the change of name. The decision of the cabinet was based on the 24 recommendations of the Meghalaya State Names Authorities Committee.
Shullai was not available for comments.
The Zig Zag Road in Rilbong has been named after Ardhendu who was an NCP MLA under the leadership of Purno Sangma.
The Zig Zag road extends from the Dorbar Shnong of Kenches Trace-Oxford-Rilbong.
The KSU Laban Circle had shouted slogans in front of the residence of Shullai and carried banner and placards to demand the renaming of the road to the late politician from Nongstoin, H S Lyngdoh, whose Shillong residence is at Oxford Hills.
Late Ardhendu was the local MLA of erstwhile Mawprem constituency.
He passed away in a helicopter crash in 2004.
On the other hand, Lyngdoh was the state’s longest serving MLA who passed away in 2015.
While the union members were protesting, a group of headmen were also present to attend a meeting called by Shullai which was later called off. The headmen resented the manner in which Shullai cancelled the meeting without prior information to them.
