MAWKYRWAT: Following its trend to keep a tab on the entry of outsiders in the state, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District has written to the legislators of Mawkyrwat, Mawsynram and Ranikor constituencies asking them to advise the government to stop facilitating the entry of outsiders in the state.
In a petition to the MLAs and MDCs on Thursday, the union apprised them of the influx of people from outside the state into Mawsynram Block, East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills on the pretext of them being “high-skilled labourers”
Stressing on influx as danger for the locals, especially in the border areas, the union said that high-skilled workers is just a disguise to facilitate their entry.
The KSU alleged that the non-tribals have misused the tag and that the high-skilled workers, after they are allowed to enter the state, engage themselves in activities such as selling vegetables which the locals are able to do.
“This is not simply an allegation but a fact as our members have apprehended some of them,” president of KSU South West Khasi Hills District, Forwardman Nongrem, said.
Meanwhile, the union also expressed resentment and non-acceptance to the standard operating procedures (SOP) issued by the government with regard to bringing in high-skilled labourers into the state.
Nongrem said that the move is like betraying the people who have walked hand in hand with the government during these trying times. With the lack of health care facilities in Mawsynram Block and South West Khasi Hills, Nongrem said, it is highly unlikely that they can fight COVID-19 if migrants are given different ways to enter.
