57K registrations in 24 hours: DU
New Delhi: Over 57,000 students have registered on a Delhi University portal for admission to undergraduate courses within 24 hours, according to official figures. The portal went live at 5 pm on Saturday and will remain open till July 4. According to the data shared by a varsity official, 57,312 aspirants registered on the portal for admission to undergraduate courses, while 18,837 students registered for postgraduate courses and 2,071 registered for PhD admissions till 5.30 pm on Sunday. The university will hold a webinar on June 23 to address doubts on the admission process. (PTI)

Puri Rath Yatra: SC to hear pleas
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday the pleas seeking recall of its order staying this year’s historic Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra, attended by lakhs of people from across the world, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The apex court had on June 18 said that in the interest of public health and safety of citizens, this year’s Rath Yatra, which was scheduled for June 23, at Puri in Odisha cannot be allowed and “Lord Jagannath won’t forgive us if we allow” it. A day after the order was passed, some applications were filed in the top court seeking recall and modification of its order. (PTI)

Show-cause notice to 5 BDOs
Kolkata: The West Bengal government has issued show-cause notice to five Block Development Officers (BDOs) in four districts for alleged irregularity in distribution of cyclone Amphan relief materials and funds, a senior official said on Sunday. Action will also be taken against public representatives in the panchayats if they are found involved in alleged misappropriation of funds mostly meant for people to rebuild damaged houses as well for farmers whose agricultural fields were damaged in the cyclone, the official said. MEA official’s wife killed
New Delhi: A 94-year-old retired External Affairs Ministry official was attacked and his 88-year-old wife stabbed to death during a robbery bid at their home in southwest Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave, police said on Sunday. B R Chawla and his wife Kanta Chawla lived alone after the death of their two children a few years ago. The incident took place around 9 PM on Saturday when the recently-appointed security guard of their building arrived at their home with his two-three associates, the police said. (PTI)

13-year-old girl gangraped
Dewas (MP): A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by five persons in Dewas city of Madhya Pradesh before being kidnapped to Rajasthan, a police official said on Sunday. The girl has been rescued from Jaipur and six persons, including her female friend and two other minors, have been arrested in connection with the crime, the official said. The victim’s father, who hails from Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh, had lodged a complaint with the police on June 16, saying that his daughter who lived with her aunt in Dewas and went to a school, had gone missing, police said. “The accused girl helped others involved in the crime to kidnap the victim from Dewas railway station on June 15,” she added.
