SHILLONG: The state government has extended the service of assistant teachers for 59 days or till fresh recruitment is done, whichever is earlier.
The move was after several teachers from Garo Hills filed a contempt petition against Ambrose Marak, the Director of School Literacy and Education.
During the hearing on the matter via video conferencing in the High Court of Meghalaya on Friday, Advocate General made a statement that on Thursday, the terms of the petitioners have been further extended.
In the light of the statement made by advocate general, the counsel for the petitioner, PT Sangma said that the contempt petitions would not survive for consideration.
Hence, he withdrew the petitions.
However, the court gave liberty to the petitioners to approach if the order of the government on extension of service is not honoured.
Earlier, the education department had issued a circular, discontinuing the extension of the 59-day contractual appointment of assistant teachers in government lower primary schools in the state.
The circular was issued by the Education official following the advertisements for the posts of teachers issued in various districts for the appointment of permanent teachers.
Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) qualification is one of the criteria for application for the posts.
