Ireland gets new Prime Minister
Dublin: Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin has been elected as new Prime Minister of Ireland in a vote held here on Saturday at a special meeting of the lower house of the Irish parliament. Announcing the voting results, Sean O Fearghail, speaker of the lower house of the Irish parliament, declared that Micheal Martin has won the election by receiving 93 votes in favour, 63 votes against and 3 votes in abstention, Xinhua reported. There are altogether 160 seats in the current lower house of the Irish parliament with one seat going to the speaker of the house who was not involved in the vote. Sean O Fearghail is a member of Fianna Fail. (IANS)

2 Yanomami killed in Amazon
Brasilia: Two members of the Yanomami ethnic group in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest were shot to death by illegal gold prospectors inside the indigenous community’s territory, according to reports from the group. Júnior Hekurari Yanomami, a member of the group who is president of Condisi-Y, the local health council, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Original Yanomami, 24, and Marcos Yanomami, 20, were slain June 12. The deaths were only reported recently due to the remoteness of the region in Brazil’s Roraima state and communication difficulties. The Hutukara association, which represents Yanomami communities in Brazil, issued a statement confirming the reports of the killings. Brazil’s national Indian foundation, known as Funai, and the Federal Police didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Relying on a conversation with a leader of the far-flung community, Hekurari said Original was shot first as a group of Yanomami followed prospectors who were trespassing. (AP)

Six killed in Taliban attack
Kabul: About six security force members were killed in a Taliban attack in northern Kunduz province on Saturday night. TOLO news reported that the attack took place in Imam Sahib district when Taliban terrorists attacked the security checkpoints. “The Taliban attack was pushed back after the arrival of the reinforcements..The Taliban have escaped from the area,” the source was quoted as saying. “Five army soldiers and a policeman were killed in the attack,” the source said while adding “Four Taliban were also killed and two others were wounded.” However, the Taliban is yet to make any statement on this attack. (ANI)

Massive protest in Pakistan
Karachi: Police, paramilitary rangers and other law enforcement agencies arrested several men and women, including students protesting against enforced disappearances in Sindh from Karachi press club on Saturday.
According to sources, the late crowd including family members of the victims gathered at the Karachi press club to hold a peaceful protest against illegal arrests and enforced disappearances of their loved ones. According to details when protesters started chanting slogans against enforced disappearances, a large number of Police, Paramilitary Rangers, and plainclothes personnel of intelligence agencies attacked peaceful protesters. They baton charged and tortured elderly men, women, young girls and students. (ANI)
