GUWAHATI: As many as six drowning deaths were reported in four districts of Assam as the flood situation in the state remained grave with as many as 14.95 lakh people affected across 21 districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority informed on Wednesday evening.
Three deaths were reported from Sathebari and Baghbar revenue circles of Barpeta district while one casualty each was reported from Nalbari, Dhubri and Nagaon districts.
As a matter of fact, Barpeta continues to be the worst hit with nearly 6lakh people affected followed by South Salmara where nearly two lakh people remain affected.
Currently, 15,289 people are taking shelter in 254 relief camps/centres set up across 11 districts.
Meanwhile, floodwaters have submerged vast areas of farmlands in the state with a crop area of 87018.17 hectares affected so far in 20 districts.
The Brahmaputra and its tributaries continue to flow above danger level.
The deluge has also damaged various roads, bridges and embankments. Besides, a few schools have been submerged in Sivasagar and Majuli districts of Upper Assam.
Hog deer deaths
Two hog deer deaths were reported on Wednesday while altogether 27 animals of Kaziranga National Park have been rescued since floodwaters submerged low-lying areas of the park. As many as 107 camps of the 223 opened for sheltering animals remain affected with six of them vacated, the divisional forest officer, Eastern Assam wildlife division informed.
On the other hand, one hog deer death was reported at the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park, while 12 of the 40 camps remain affected by the deluge, the DFO Mangaldai wildlife division, informed.
Landslide in Cachar
A person named Shankar Pashi, aged about 50 years, was electrocuted after a tree uprooted by a landslide fell on a power line in Cachar district on Wednesday, the ASDMA landslide report informed. With this casualty, the overall landslide-related death toll in the state this monsoon season has gone up to 24.
