SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Sohra Circle has called for cancelling trading licenses for truckers who transport limestone, sumo vehicles and taxis from Majai, Ichamati to Shillong.
The organisation on Monday also submitted a memorandum to the CEM of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titos Chyne, apprising him of the border trade with Bangladesh in Majai.
Stating that tribals are getting enough opportunity in trade, the organisation said the KHADC should cancel existing trading licenses, adding that it should not issue fresh licenses for export or to open up shops there.
Highlighting the prevalence of the Benami transaction, the FKJGP also urged the Council to keep a check on the system.
Alleging that most of the names of the villages in Majai are not in Khasi language, the FKJGP has also demanded the names to be changed.
