Israel strikes Hamas sites
Jerusalem: The Israeli military has said that it struck Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip in retaliation against rocket attacks by Gaza-based militants.
Attack helicopters and fighter jets hit Hamas targets in the northern Gaza Strip, including “underground infrastructure”, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday citing an Israeli military spokesperson as saying in a statement.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. (IANS)
2 killed in Idaho plane collision
Coeur d’Alene (US): Two people died in a plane crash on Sunday over Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, and as many as six other people may be missing, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said.
Witnesses said they saw two planes colliding above the water, then crashing into the lake near Powderhorn Bay, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The crash happened around 2:20 p.m.
Multiple local agencies, including the sheriff’s marine teams, local fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the crash, the Spokane Spokesman-Review reported. (AP)
IS intensifies attacks in Syria
Damascus: The Islamic State (IS) terror group has intensified attacks against the Syrian government forces in the country’s eastern desert region, according to a war monitor.
Over the past 72 hours, 20 Syrian soldiers were killed and 25 others went missing as a result of the IS attacks in the desert near Sukhneh town, Xinhua news agency quoted the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) as saying on Sunday.
The UK-based watchdog group said 31 IS members were also killed, adding that group’s attacks have spread from the countryside of Aleppo in northern Syria to the eastern province of Deir al-Zour. (IANS)
US nightclub shooting kills 2
Washington: At least two people were killed and eight others injured during a shooting at a nightclub in the US state of South Carolina, police said.
The shooting took place just before 2 a.m. on Sunday in the city of Greenville when Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies noticed a disturbance at the club, Lavish Lounge, and called for backup due to active gunfire from inside the building, Xinhua news agency agency reported.
The nightclub was hosting a “very, very, very, large crowd” for a concert when the shooting erupted, Sheriff Hobart Lewis said in an interview with the CNN affiliate WYFF. (IANS)
