SHILLONG: Williamnagar, which was once a hotspot for insurgent activities, is now insurgent-free for some years but a splinter group of the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) is once again trying to woo local youths for resurrecting the organisation.
Revealing this, NPP MLA from Williamnagar, Marcuise Marak said that Williamnagar was severely affected by insurgency two to three years back but now things are getting back on track with no insurgency.
He informed that the splinter group was trying to lure the youths to join them.
“Many youths have died already and people have seen this and they are not willing to join. Now nobody believes them,” Marak said.
Marak also informed that the government is trying to support the youth in various spheres and motivating them to come for competitive exams such as the MPSC, UPSC et al.
Talking about the brighter side that had come up after insurgency came to a halt in the district, Marak said, in terms of infrastructure, Williamnagar was not lagging behind. He said that a lot of thrust has been given to the education sector and the district has good colleges and schools that are coming up. “We are coming up with a horticulture culture college which was the vision of PA Sangma and we have already had several rounds of meeting with the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and we hope it will start functioning soon,” he added.
