Ethiopia’s unrest sees 239 dead
Addis Ababa: At least 239 people have been killed and 3,500 arrested in more than a week of unrest in Ethiopia that poses the biggest challenge yet to its Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister.
In the Oromia region, the toll includes 215 civilians along with nine police officers and five militia members, regional police commissioner Mustafa Kedir told the ruling party-affiliated Walta TV on Wednesday.
Officials earlier said 10 people were killed in the capital, Addis Ababa, eight of them civilians, amid outrage after a popular singer was shot dead last on Monday. (AP)
Pak suspends licenses of 34 pilots
Islamabad: Pakistan’s aviation authority has suspended the licenses of 34 more pilots of Pakistan International Airlines on suspicion of holding fake degrees, according to reports on Wednesday.
Last week, the national flag carrier terminated the services of 52 employees on various charges, including fake degrees. The PIA has grounded more than 140 pilots after it was revealed in the National Assembly that some of them held ‘dubious and fake’ licenses.
According to a notification, licenses of 34 more pilots will remain suspended till the inquiry against them has not been completed, Geo News reported. (PTI)
Landslide buries nine in China
Beijing: Rescue operations are underway after a landslide caused by heavy rainfall swept away nine people on Wednesday in central China’s Hubei province.
According to the local flood control and drought relief headquarters, the landslide occurred at around 4 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday in Dahe Township of Huangmei County, Xinhua news agency reported.
Rescue teams from the emergency response, public security, armed police, medical and other departments have rushed to the site and relocated more than 40 villagers. (IANS)
