81 villages affected in Garo Hills

TURA: A total of 181 villages spread across the three development blocks of Demdema, Tikrikilla and Selsella have been severely flooded due to the incessant downpour that have been lashing the region for the past one week.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh, told The Shillong Times that there are 3,467 people from 181 villages taking refuge in government relief camps set up in the affected zone.
The district administration has set up 21 relief camps (11 in Selsella block region and 10 in Demdema) while 1,873 hectares of agricultural land and another 1,200 hectares of horticultural land have been damaged by the floodwaters.
A total of 37 livestock animals, including cattle, goats and even a pony have been reportedly missing due to the floods.
District administration also informed that fishery ponds have been damaged in Tikrikilla while in Tura, three houses were damaged by the downpour.
