NONGPOH: Two persons died and one critically injured in an accident in Ri Bhoi district on Wednesday.
Sources said the accident happened around 7 pm when a speeding truck proceeding towards Guwahati hit a crane of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) parked along NH6 overturning it. The crane (AS01DC7473) and a Bolero Pickup (AS01HC8010) along with some NHAI workers were on their way to rescue a vehicle stuck in the area of the Forest Department located at Umryngksai village near here.
The sources said three persons were seriously injured and were immediately shifted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital. However, two succumbed to their injuries. The deceased are father and son duo hailing from Bihar and identified as Hari Rai and Ajay Rai.
The police informed that the truck (ML04A8560) fled following the incident but was apprehended at the Toll Plaza of NHAI, 20th Mile Pahammawlein and the driver was identified as Moon Boro hailing from lad Rymbai, East Jaintia Hills District.
Investigation is under way.
