SHILLONG: Reckoning the 39th National Games, the State Government has approved an amount of Rs 125 crores for the upgradation of the sports facility at J N Stadium complex, Shillong.
The decision to this effect was taken during a meeting of the Sports Department held in the presence of the Sports Minister and other officials here on Thursday.
Later, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said that it is important to create sporting infrastructure in the state keeping in view of the National Games.
As per the plan, the Government would put up certain sporting facilities in the JN complex amounting to Rs 125 crores.
At the same time, the Government is also working on proposals to build sports infrastructure in rural areas of the state amounting to Rs 100 crore.
However, the project for rural areas was not approved in Thursday’s meeting since the lists of the proposed projects are not completed yet. The Chief Minister further said that sport is one area where the youths of the state have excelled and strengthening of infrastructure would give more opportunities to the youths in the sports sector.
Earlier this year, the foundation was also laid for the state and Garo Hills’ first-ever exclusive football stadium and a multipurpose sporting arena named PA Sangma stadium in Dakopgre.
The PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex to be built at a cost of Rs 125 crores of will come up at the existing (MP) PA Sangma stadium and its adjoining area. It will comprise of the state’s first and only natural turf football stadium and also an indoor stadium that will include a swimming pool, squash, badminton and basketball courts.
