GUWAHATI: Twenty two districts continue to be plagued by floods in Assam with over 22 lakh people in 2026 villages/localities affected and one more death reported in the past 24 hours, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority informed on Monday evening.
The overall deluge-related death toll with the latest casualty in Golaghat district has gone up to 103.
Goalpara district remains the worst affected in terms of population affected as 4.62 lakh people are affected in four revenue circles, followed by Barpeta, where over 3.80 lakh continue to be affected.
Rescue and relief operations are underway in the flood-hit districts. NDRF teams evacuated 85 people in Barpeta district while State Disaster Response Force along with residents evacuated 12 people to safer places in Dhemaji district on Monday.
As many as 45,565 displaced people are currently taking shelter in 432 relief camps/centres.
The Met office, meanwhile, has predicted more rain in Northeast over the next two days.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the intensity and distribution of rainfall is very likely to increase over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh with widespread rainfall activity along with isolated heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next couple of days.
On the other hand, the flood-related death toll of animals in Kaziranga National Park has gone up to 132 while 162 animals have been rescued, the divisional forest officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife division, informed on Monday.
The number of camps submerged in the national park however has come down to 62 from 88 camps on Sunday.
