GUWAHATI: In pursuit of its objective to ramp up the COVID-19 testing facilities in the state, the Assam health department has made operational one more Viral Research and Development Labaratory (VRDL) in the campus of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) today. It happens to be second such laboratory in the JMCH. This is the 17th VRDL in Assam.

Sharing the news, Assam health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Happy to share that from today we have operationslised one more Viral Research and Development Labaratories (VRDL) in the campus of Jorhat Medical College. We have now 17 VRDL in Assam. Needless to say that there was none in the month January,2020.”

Meanwhile, Assam has already carried out more than seven lakh tests for detection of COVID-19 all over the state in view of the spike in the positive cases from the middle of June this year.

The Union Health Minister last week asked Assam and eight other states in the country to ramp up the testing facilities to detect COVID-19 positive cases at the earliest.
