Student in 7th heaven after call from PM
Kochi: Vinayak M Mallil was in seventh heaven when he received a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday for being the school topper in the Commerce stream of the CBSE 12th standard exam. “Sabash Vinayak, Sabash. How is the josh?” the Prime Minister asked Vinayak, whose father is a daily wage earner. “High Sir,” replied the Class XII student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyala, Neriamangalam, about 70 km from here. The conversation was aired on Sunday during the 14th Episode of Prime Minister’s “Mann Ki Baat” radio address. Vinayak, who stays a village bordering Ernakulam and Idukki districts, said it was a moment of excitement for him after he learnt that it was the call from the Prime Minister. (PTI)

Man dies in police custody
Kota (Rajasthan): A 28-year-old man has died after allegedly being beaten up inside lock-up at Khanpur police station in Jhalawar district. The family members of the deceased man accused the police station of thrashing him severely leading to his death. Police, though, lodged a case under Section 176 (inquiry by magistrate into cause of death) of CrPC and initiated investigation into the matter. However, a judicial probe was later ordered into the matter after demands were raised by the family members, who received support from the local MLA. In accordance with National Human Rights Commission guidelines on custodial deaths, the SHO of Khanpur police station Kamalchand Meena was suspended and the entire station staff sent to the Police Lines, the Jhalawar SP said. Yogi surveys flood situation
Gorakhpur/Ballia/Varanasi: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey of the areas inundated by heavy rainfall in Gorakhpur district and reviewed COVID-19 preparations in other parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. He inspected the preparations for making Lalit Narayan Mishra Railway Hospital and AIIMS-Gorakhpur L-2 hospitals for treatment of COVID-19 patients. He said the L-2 hospitals should be ready at the earliest, the UP government said in a statement. Officials said one 50-bed ward for coronavirus patients is being set up in AIIMS-Gorakhpur. After inspecting the water level, he asked flood and irrigation department officials to constantly monitor and ensure all dams remain safe. He directed the Gorakhpur district administration to ensure adequate deployment of boats in the flood-hit areas. During the inspection of the railway hospital, the chief minister inaugurated a remote-operated robotic trolley, a North-Eastern Railway official said. (PTI)
