SHILLONG: MLA of Mawsynram H.M. Shangpliang has sent a request in black and white to the Regional Head of HDFC Bank Ltd for opening bank branches and ATM Machines at Dangar.

Shangpliang said that UCO is the only bank catering to requirements of the people while there are more than 40 villages around Dangar that are dependent on the UCO Bank alone for money transactions since most of the people in these villages are engaged in selling betel nuts and broom sticks to Assam and other adjoining states.

“During this Covid-19 pandemic, there has been constant need for the people to withdraw money from the bank and it is disheartening to note that people start queuing up in front of the UCO Bank branch at 3.00 am in the morning. While at times, the people have to return to their villages without money due to shortage of cash in the bank branch”, he said.

He also pointed out to the International Border Haat at Dangar which operates once a week and it is economically very active from both sides with the export of goods like betel nuts, betel leaf, fruits, cosmetics, footwear, etc., from India as well as import of plastic wares and furniture from across the border.

Shangpliang said that there was an urgent need of setting up of a Bank and ATM Machine in Dangar since people need money for their business transactions as the mostly engaged in selling betel nuts and broom sticks to Assam and other adjoining states.
