Dry betel nut worth Rs 18L seized
SHILLONG: The BSF and Meghalaya Police, in a joint operation on Thursday, seized 140 bags of dry betel nut worth over Rs 18 lakh in a village in South Garo Hills. Acting on a tip-off, the Border Security Force troops of 170 Battalion and police personnel intercepted the consignment at Durbeta village under Rongra Police Station. Kuldeep Saini, Inspector General, lauded the team work and coordination between the two forces in seizing the consignment.

Ban on illegal fishing in WKH
NONGSTOIN: Following reports of using illegal practices of catching fish in the district such as use of poison and explosives, the District Magistrate of West Khasi Hills has promulgated Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any person or group from indulging in such activities. The District Magistrate, T Lyngwa, said that unscrupulous elements have been reportedly using poisonous substance such as chemicals and explosive which has affected aquatic life severely. Anyone found in violation of the order will be punished, Lyngwa said.

Childline service now in SWKH
MAWKYRWAT: The Childline service was inaugurated in Mawkyrwat on Thursday, by Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo, who was also the chief guest of the day. The Childline India Foundation, Ministry of Women and Child Development, has selected Nongstoin Social Service Society (NSSS) to implement the services in the district. Others who were present included district Superintendent of Police, District Child Protection Officer, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, a representative from the Juvenile Justice Board and the Principal of Nativity School, Mawkyrwat.
