SHILLONG: Local MDC of Sohra, Titos Chyne, has urged the East Khasi Hills Superintendant of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, to take punitive action against the person who, he claimed, had assaulted a woman in Sohra.
It may be mentioned that the police had, in a statement recently, rubbished the claims that a woman, who narrowly averted a theft bid, was sexually assaulted by the robber.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the SP, Chyne said, “The person is an outsider. He not only tried to steal but he strangled her, also intending to rape and murder”.
He was informed by the SP that the police will check her medical report.
Meanwhile, president of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), South Khasi Hills, Ribokstar Diengdoh, claimed that the man hit her on the head, pushed her to the ground, strangled her, he covered her mouth when she tried to shriek.
“Fortunately for her, a car passed that area and she was saved. What would have happened if there was nobody,” Diengdoh questioned.
Demanding that the accused must be booked, Diengdoh said the statement issued by the police recently would embolden criminals. As per the police, the 44-year-old woman was passing through NIT Gate, Jiva Resort, Kuttmadan Road, when one man started following her. The latter also tried to pull her hand bag. Resisting the attempt, she did not let the person snatch her hand bag.
“There has been no attempt to sexually assault the woman and the intention of the person was to rob her bag,” the police had said, adding that the investigation is under way.
