Ban on killing of fish in EJH
KHLIEHRIAT: Following complaints and reports of rampant and illegal killing of fish, the District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills has prohibited killing of fish using poison and dynamite in Tisang, Prang and other rivers in the district. “The order also prohibits use of chemical and biological substances which could harm and kill the fishes/aquatic life and any activity that could poison the river and bring danger to aquatic life and human consumption,” the district magistrate said in an order, while warning of legal action against any violation.
Call for Garo language recognition
SHILLONG: The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) Central Executive Body has lamented that the state government has not made a credible move with regard to the inclusion of the Garo language in the Eighth Schedule, while reminding it of the commitment. The AHAM has demanded that the government initiate the works for including the Garo language in the Eighth Schedule as “Garos also need recognition of their mother tongue” when other communities are also doing the same.
E-POS devices in Ri Bhoi FPS shops
NONGPOH: The Deputy Commissioner (Supply) of Ri Bhoi has informed that all EPS centres will be automated through e-POS (Electronic Point of Sale Digital System) devices following the implementation of the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme. The DC has urged all heads of families registered as AAY & PHH beneficiaries to submit their mobile number along with Aadhaar to their respective concerned fair price shop (FPS). The FPS dealers, after collecting the above data, are to submit it, the DC added. Enrollment of Aadhaar is functional either in the DC’s office or at BDOs’ office during working hours.
Society thanks MLA for assistance
SHILLONG: The executive members of the Greater Laban Community Development Society expressed gratitude for the all out assistance provided by MLA Sanbor Shullai amid the pandemic. The members, in a meeting with the MLA on Thursday, also discussed the mass sanitisation drive in 19th South Shillong Constituency, a statement said. It was also agreed that COVID committees need to ease the burden of frontline workers, an idea suggested by the MLA.

SHILLONG: The 5th webinar lecture series, organised by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) & North Eastern Training, Research and Advocacy Foundation (NETRA) along with the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya, dwelt on localising the sustainable development goals. The webinar, based on ‘Localising Sustainable Development Goals: Perspectives from North East India’ under the theme of ‘Issues & challenges of localising sustainable development goals in Meghalaya’, was addressed distinguished personalities.
Behavioural change training
NONGPOH: A two-day training programme on ‘Behavioural Change on COVID-19’ has been organised by the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Ri Bhoi, for the officials of various departments at District Arts & Culture Auditorium Nongpoh. Conducted in four batches on August 5 and 6, the training aims to instill the concepts of effectively managing the COVID-19 situation. The event was chaired by FM Lakiang, EAC. In the programme, apart from the introduction to COVID-19 and the ways to cope with life in these times, various myths and facts related to the disease were discussed.
Demise of religious member condoled
SHILLONG: The members of Harisabha Committee have condoled the death of Bhanu Pratap Roy, who passed away in Guwahati on Wednesday morning. Roy was closely associated with Sanatan Dharma Sabha Harisabha and had served the institution as president of Durga Puja committee and permanent committee for smooth functioning of Sanatan Dharma Sabha Harisabha. “At this time of grief, we pray to the Almighty to give strength to the bereaved family members,” the members said.
Ananta Bhuyan new NCC ADG
SHILLONG: Major General Ananta Bhuyan, on Thursday, assumed charge as the ADG NCC Dte NE Region, a statement said. An alumnus of Sainik School Goalpara, Assam, and NDA Khadakwasla, Bhuyan was commissioned in the Kumaon Regt of Indian Army in December 1983. Apart from possessing extensive operational experience, he has a large number of academic degrees to his credit. One of the pioneers of Siachen Glacier, Bhuyan, as a Brigadier Commander, made immense contribution in counter Insurgency Operation in Assam. He was also conferred with the Sena Medal award.
Plea to expedite teachers’ regularisation
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya SSA School Association, Central Body, has sought the intervention of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to expedite the creation of posts and shifting of 12,541 existing SSA teachers from State Implementation Society to the Education department on regular basis as per RTE/SSA norms. In a letter to the chief minister, the association reminded him that it had written to the government on several occasions in the matter last year, but the response came out as “the matter is under examination at the Government Level”. “The 5,814 primary and 6,727 upper primary teachers, recruited on contractual basis under RTE/SSA, are separate from regular teachers of state which is not appropriate as SSA is not separate but aligned with RTE Act,” the letter read.
Free online NET coaching
SHILLONG: In view of students not being able to avail coaching through live classes, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has offered free online coaching for UGC NET, which will be supervised by the faculty of the university. The free online classes will begin from August 17. To register for the coaching, the UGC NET aspirants will have to register their names in the link released in the USTM’s Facebook handle.
