Curfew partially withdrawn from Sonitpur group clash area

GUWAHATI: The Sonitpur district administration has partially withdrawn curfew from areas falling under Dhekiajuli police station from 6am to 6pm.

The district administration had in the wake of clashes between two groups in areas under Thelamara and Dhekiajuli Police stations clamped an indefinite curfew on Wednesday.

“However, no one who has not got a permit from the district magistrate shall go about in public or leave their house within the limit of Dhekiajuli police station area between 6pm and 6am. Movement of all individuals during this period shall remain strictly prohibited,” the notification issued on Monday, said.

“Further, no movement of individuals shall be allowed on Saturdays and Sundays at any time all over the area of Dhekiajuli police station. The curfew imposed in Thelamara police station shall continue until further orders,” it said.

A few persons were reportedly persons injured in the clash during a bike rally taken out at Goruduba and Bharashingori under Thelamara police station to celebrate the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on Wednesday.

According to reports, miscreants set two wheelers and a vehicle on fire and also pelted stones at the vehicle of Sonitpur deputy commissioner, Manvendra Pratap Singh.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, meanwhile, has directed the state director general of police to conduct an investigation into the law and order breakdown in the area.

Additional security forces have been deployed in the area while four police pickets have also been set up in the two villages to maintain law and order.

Sonitpur police also carried out a flag march along with the personnel from 30 Battalion CRPF in areas falling under Thelamara police station on Friday.

 

Assam Police, meanwhile, is monitoring the situation in the area and also keeping a close eye on social media posts.

Police sources informed on Monday that Ashikir Rahman, a resident of Bhumuraguri in Tezpur, has been arrested for posting pro-Pakistan slogans on social media.
