NONGSTOIN: Despite any order issued by West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, the members of Village Defend Party (VDP) from Maweit have been penalising the truckers, accusing them of damaging the road.
It may be mentioned that the government levies road tax from everyone so that the cost of the construction, as well as the maintenance of the roads, can be raised.
The truckers and the truck owners of Nongstoin that carry essential commodities and timber have accused the Village Defend Party (VDP) from Maweit of penalising the truckers with a huge amount of money for damaging the road.
The truckers and the truck owners, while speaking to the media persons here on Monday, also alleged that the VDP members of Maweit had them for violating the orders issued by the VDP. They also said that the penalty would vary from Rs 500 to Rs 3000.
The truckers who transport cement and timbers have made their stand saying that Nongstoin-Maweit road is not a private road but it belongs to PWD, adding that they pay the road tax every year. They also said that the issue should be dealt directly with the PWD.
Meanwhile, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa, has said that the office has given no authority to penalise the truckers and has assured that he will look into the matter.
