GUWAHATI: A group of miscreants attempted to “attack” Assam singer Zubeen Garg after intercepting his vehicle in the Ganeshguri area here around midnight on Wednesday and hurled abuses at the artiste while he was returning to his Kahilipara home from a studio in Zoo Road Tiniali.
According to the first information report (FIR) lodged by Zubeen at Dispur police station later, six youths who were on a Suzuki Ciaz vehicle bearing registration number, AS-01BY-0675, violated COVID-19 safety protocols during night curfew, came out of the car (with beer bottles in hand) and started abusing the singer “using unparliamentarily language” near the Ganesh Mandir point and the road linking Ganeshguri with Kahilipara.
The miscreants allegedly “defamed” Zubeen and reportedly fled the scene after confronting the two personal security officers (provided by the government) who were with the singer for his safety.
Meanwhile, Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday condemned the attempt to attack the singer while assuring that the culprits would be brought to book.
“We condemn the incident as the situation could have been worse had it not been for the personal security officers who were with him. The commissioner of police has been asked to look into the case. We are confident that the culprits would be arrested soon as the registration number of the vehicle they were in has been mentioned in the FIR,” Sarma said.
The minister further requested the people of Assam to keep the popular singer away from controversy, be it on social media or any other platform.
“We want Zubeen to be away from any political debates or controversies. Rather, Zubeen, who is a cultural icon of the state, should be beyond any controversy and debates, and allowed to work freely to promote the art and culture of Assam,” Sarma said.
