Groups allege misuse of their names
SHILLONG: The Joint Coordination Committee, comprising the FKJGP and KSU Upper Shillong Circle, after receiving information that miscreants were misusing the names of the two organisations, confronted the persons involved and demanded an apology. The accused duly apologised and blamed companies from outside the state for prompting them to do so, a statement said. The organisations, therefore, warned such companies against taking advantage of the people of the state.
Kongthong residents accept rice
SHILLONG: The office of the SDO Sohra Civil Sub-Division (Supply), on Thursday, distributed rice to the residents of Kongthong, who have been refusing to accept the commodity for over 7 months alleging that it was mixed with some rotten grains. Some residents of the village said initially that the office mixed rotten rice with fresh one, which was strongly opposed by the public. However, the office subsequently agreed to distribute fresh rice which satisfied the residents. Around 36 households refused to take the rice distributed by a dealer Stogen Lynrah and the Sordar Sylloklang Majaw as they refused to recognise Majaw as the Sordar. According to them, the Sordar is elected by the Dorbar, which is also responsible to appoint a dealer of the PDS items. The Kongthong residents have expressed gratitude to the state government including the SDO Sohra Civil Sub-Division, Deputy Commissioner (Supply) East Khasi Hills, Food and Civil Supply for taking action.
Improve law & order: Rymbui
SHILLONG: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has stressed on the need to improve the law and order scenario in the state. Speaking as the chief guest at the police review conference here, the home minister said the laxity gives rise to crime incidents. He also urged the police to find solution to crimes and enhance awareness among the people. During the conference, discussions were held on law and order, crime against women and children and other related issues. The home minister was felicitated by R Chandranathan, Director General of Police, while presentations were made by I Nongrang, Additional Director General of Police (L&O/TAP), H Nongpluh, Additional Director General of Police (SB/CID), and GK Iangrai, Assistant Inspector General of Police (A).
Post-flood relief to Paham families
TURA: Having witnessed the devastation caused by last month’s floods in the Tikrikilla region, where peoples’ homes in Lower Paham village were waterlogged for 13 long days compelling its inhabitants to wade through dirty water everyday leading to widespread skin infections, a church-backed non-governmental organisation has stepped in to provide some help, this week. Members of the Muktidata Multipurpose Cooperative Society extended a helping hand to 397 families living in and around Paham village with the active support of Muktidata Tribal Welfare Society and the Mahila Morcha. The inhabitants of Lower Paham village, who faced water logging for two weeks, were provided with disinfectant phenol, dettol soap, face mask, candles and biodegradable arecanut food plates for use. Director and priest, Benoy mentioned that an outbreak of skin infections began in the village soon after the flood waters had receded and as part of the relief programme, an awareness drive was also conducted about the modes of infection not just on skin diseases but the ongoing pandemic.
SSA teachers demand release of dues
TURA: The All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urging him to look into the issue of their pending salaries. In their memorandum, the teachers, while reminding that their salaries for three months — May to July 2020 — are currently pending, urged the chief minister to facilitate its immediate release. The teachers pointed out that irregular release of salaries, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 situation when the rates of all goods and commodities are very high, is causing financial problems for them.
