NEW DELHI: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s cryptic twitter message on Monday on change of guard in Shillong Raj Bhavan, enquiring where was Meghalaya located, has raised many eyebrows here.
It is a case of ignorance about North East or an apparent dig at Meghalaya’s governor-designate Satya Pal Malik? That’s the question being raised.
Taunting the unexpected transfer of Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik to Meghalaya in place of Tathagata Roy, Omar tweeted without tagging anyone “Where Meghalaya is? #AskingForAFriend”.
This has created mild ripples in political circles here since Omar Abdullah is a third generation Chief Minister after his grandfather legendary Sheikh Abdullah and father Dr Farooq Abdullah. Educated abroad, Omar was also the junior minister for External Affairs during Atal Behari Vajpayee’s government.
There are some circles who surmise that the tweet is politically-loaded and directed at the outgoing Governor Roy since he had created huge controversy when he gave a call to boycott Kashmiri goods and the famous Amarnath Yatra in the wake of terrorist violence.
Omar, as then chief minister, had taken umbrage over controversial statement from a person holding high constitutional position.
