TURA: The BJP, Tura City District, along with Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), on Saturday, repaired major potholes along the 30-km stretch of road from Tura to Jengjal on the Shillong/Guwahati road.
“This road is a highway but is full of potholes, which is a shame to the authorities as well as the people of Garo Hills. Some holes were 5-inch deep and one-metre wide and often filled with muddy waters. The legislators saw these holes during their visits to Garo Hills but never bothered to ask the concerned departments to repair the holes in the road. BJP saw the plight and distress of the travellers and immediately took up the task to repair the road, which took around 6 hours to complete,” BJP Spokesperson, Bernard N Marak, informed.
Marak lamented that public safety, sadly, is not taken as a priority by the leaders while, at the same time, informed that more than 50 large potholes were filled by BJP volunteers and drains were dug to allow water to flow through during their work.
Marak said that the potholes pose a threat to travellers as they are not visible at night, resulting in accidents and loss of human lives.
“BJP felt that there was no point risking so much when something could be done so the repair work was taken up. People have stopped expecting change from legislators, who do not have time to address their grievances. But we have covered 30 km in 6 hours and if time permits, BJP will cover more miles in coming days,” he said.
