SHILLONG: The state government has decided to seek more information from NEHU before making up its mind on the UGC examinations.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday said that discussions were on and the government would have to look at the pros and cons before taking a call on the matter.
The Education department on Monday held a meeting with NEHU authorities and discussed the entire gamut of issues.
“We need some more inputs and we will sit on Wednesday for a final decision,” Rymbui said.
As per indications, the state government is in all likelihood going to seek a postponement of UGC exams scheduled to be completed within September 30.
Even students have expressed their reservation over the holding of UGC Examinations.
College and University students across the country including students in NEHU have raised the banner of protest against what they describe as a decision that “reeks of insensitivity” of the Union Ministry of Education.
Rangdajied Marwein, a student of NEHU, questioned the decision of holding the examinations by risking the life of students.
“What is the hurry in holding examinations by not caring for the life of students,” he said while raising questions over holding online examinations when internet connectivity even in the capital city of Shillong does not remain stable.
“There were no classes this year and students are just preparing everything by themselves,” said another student.
The Supreme Court, in its recent verdict, had maintained that students cannot be promoted without sitting for their examinations and that while states can cancel the examinations scheduled for September this year, they would have to approach the University Grants Commission to extend the deadline beyond September 30.
