SHILLONG: State PHE Minister, Samlin Malngiang, on Monday said that the government has targeted to provide safe and adequate drinking water facility under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to at least 1.02 lakh households by 2020.
Samlin, who was addressing a gathering at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Greater Laitkor Water Supply Scheme, also informed that since 2017, a total of Rs 453 crore has been sanctioned under different central and state schemes for the implementation of a number of developmental projects in the state through the PHE department.
Samlin laid the foundation stone in the presence of local MLA and MDC of Nongkrem Constituency, Lambor Malngiang, officials of the PHE department, local headman, members of the Dorbar Shnong and the Village Water and Sanitation Committee.
Stating that the Greater Laitkor Water Supply Scheme is aimed to be completed within two years from the date of commencement, Samlin lauded the tireless efforts of the local MLA and MDC in ensuring that the scheme sees the light of day.
Sanctioned in July at an estimated cost of Rs 28.99 crore, the scheme will cover the villages of Laitkor Lumheh, Laitkor Rngi, Laitkor Nongdaneng and Laitkor Mawri.
The scheme is set to benefit 2,500 households covering 15,000 inhabitants with safe drinking water.
With regard to the improvement of the Mawkma-Laitryngew and Mawphlang-Mawngap-Marbisu water supply scheme, which has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 10 crore and Rs 30 crore respectively, Samlin said that the work has commenced and will be completed soon.
Lambor, on the other hand, expressed gratitude to the landowners for voluntarily donating their lands for the implementation of the scheme.
During the occasion, a resolution was also passed with regard to the hassle-free implementation of the scheme.
