GUWAHATI: Assam will soon have a state university imparting multi-disciplinary courses.

The Assam Assembly on Wednesday approved a bill to set up the Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Biswabidyalaya in Upper Assam’s Golaghat district.

The new institution, once completed, will follow a curriculum in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), which was recently announced by the Centre.

Assam education minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma informed through Twitter that the university would be the first state university after implementation of the National Education Policy.

“With the passage of the ‘Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Biswabidyalaya Act’ in Assam Assembly today, I have accomplished another positive agenda of the government,” Sarma said.

“This will be the first state university after implementation of the National Education Policy. So, the university will have multidisciplinary courses in line with the new National Education Policy,” he informed the Assembly.

The minister said that “Golaghat district, despite having abundance of resources, has not had many academic institutions. Our government had earlier set up an engineering college there and now we have proposed to set up the Birangana Sati Sadhani State University in the district.”

Praising the development, Assam minister and sitting MLA from Bokakhat constituency in Golaghat district, Atul Bora said that the passing of the Sati Sadhini Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya Bill, 2020 will give a renewed push to higher education in the district.
