NONGSTOIN: Calling the state government “weak”, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has asserted that it will resort to taking action is the former fails to take stock of the situation along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The HYC West Khasi Hills and HYC Ri Muliang Circle have demanded of the government to start focussing on the unresolved border disputes between the two states.
The Union has also condemned the Assam government for creating issues along the border area, making the border-dwellers feel insecure.
Alleging that hundreds of people from the neighbouring state visit Langpih and Mawsikar every week, the HYC said that people from the neighbouring state claim that Mawsikar falls under Assam.
Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh, HYC president, West Khasi Hills Unit, said that notwithstanding the violations made by Assam, the leaders from the state are keeping mum, which indicates that they are weak.
Stating that Assam has time and again flouted the status quo signed by the two states, Kharsyiemlieh exhorted the state government to either remove the Assam Police Outpost in Mawsikar village or set up one outpost at Mawsikar so that the locals living in the area will feel secure.
Claiming that Assam has been bringing fresh people to settle in Lawbah, Langpih, Umsohran, Mawbynna and Mawkoibari, the HYC has urged the West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police to install a checkpoint at Kamphodduli so as to keep a tab on the fresh settlement.
