NONGSTOIN: The much-awaited road from Nongstoin to Maweit that has put the people of Maweit area into serious difficulties is now seeing a ray of hope after the state government has approved construction of the road project.
It may be mentioned that the Nongstoin-Maweit road had gained a lot of notoriety because of its deplorable condition.
After the people of the area including the village headmen, NGOs and the public raised the banner of protest against the government for doing nothing to improve the road, which was constructed since the Assam government days.
Hundreds of memoranda were sent to different PWD ministers but to no avail. Now the MDA government, after seeing the prospects of revenue generation from the area from coal and the hurdles faced by the people, has approved the road project.
While assuring the people of Maweit area, MLA of Mawshynrut Constituency, Gigur Myrthong, said the amount for construction of the Nongstoin-Maweit Road will be funded by World Bank, which is approximately about Rs 100 crore.
He added that the matter was now under process and about to reach the final stages and he expected the tender to be floated within December this year.
Stating that Riangdo-Hahim Road has also got new sanction from the North Eastern Council (NEC) at an approximate amount of Rs 130 crore, he assured the tender notice will be floated soon within this year.
Claiming that both the roads including Nongstoin-Maweit and Riangdo-Hahim will be constructed with an intermediate lane, he urged the people of the area to be patient as he will try to fulfill all the promises that he made during the election.
