Activist sued for whopping Rs 5 cr

TURA: An East Garo Hills-based social activist has been served a legal notice and has been sued for a king’s ransom for allegedly defaming the name of A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) by accusing the latter of terrorising villagers in North Garo Hills.
The legal notice was served to Nilbath Ch Marak on Monday by Advocate BR Marak on behalf of incumbent AHAM chairman, Champion R Sangma.
Nilbath has being sued by Champion for a whopping Rs 5,00,00,000 for the alleged defamation.
According to the legal notice, Nilbath had earlier accused the AHAM of terrorising the entire village of Chitukona under Dainadubi outpost in North Garo Hills.
The legal notice also claimed that allegations were made against some of its members being former members of the GNLA and ANVC. An FIR alleging the same was also filed by Nilbath.
“The defamatory statements, which you made in the FIR and in the papers, has a tendency to injure the reputation of my client and the organisation i.e., to lower the prestige of the organisation in the estimation of others and to bring the organisation in obliquity contempt and ridicule to which, my client also reserves the right to file a suit for defamation and damages,” the legal notice read.
