Invitation for scholarship to minority students in Ri Bhoi
NONGPOH: Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday informed that the Education department has invited applications for availing scholarships under three-year schemes, viz., pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-means-based scholarship, for the year 2020-2021, from students belonging to six minority communities — Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Zoroastrian (Parsis), Muslim and Christian — from the district. Eligible students can apply for the scholarships online at www.scholarships.gov.in/www.minorityaffairs.gov.in or via mobile app National Scholarship (NSP). Students are to submit bank account details and should be pursuing their studies in a government or recognised private institute with at least 50 per cent marks in previous examinations, the DC said in a statement. “Last date to submit application is October 31, 2020,” the statement said.

Containment zone tag extended
TURA: The West Garo Hills District Administration has extended the containment period for Mendipathar market and its adjoining areas till Sunday. The decision was taken following the detection of 17 fresh COVID-19 cases till Tuesday. It may be mentioned that separate cases were detected on September 19, 21 and 22. The district administration has also directed people to abstain themselves from visiting Mendipathar market until the situation there limps backs to normalcy. However, vehicles have been allowed to pass through without stopping at the market area.

Demand to set up power substation
JOWAI: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded setting up of a substation at Namdor area for regular supply of power to the residents of the area. The KSU informed that the members of the Namdong and Nartiang units met the Superintendent of MeECL and apprised him of the need to set up a substation in the area. According to a statement, it was assured to the KSU that the MeECL has been looking into the issue.
New KSU units formed in WJH
JOWAI: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Jaintia Hills District Unit, has formed a new unit at Umlasalait and Leimoo in West Jaintia Hills. The office-bearers of the Umsalait unit include Theh Imaya I Shadap Manner as president, Nidapoi Sumer as vice president, Honestlyborn Sajem as general secretary, et al. The members of Leimoo Unit include Jevelin Shadap Manner as president, Jopmi Lyngdoh as vice president, Livingstone Khlem as general secretary among others.
