TURA: A major fault on a tower line led to a 10-hour power cut in the entire West and South West Garo Hills districts on Saturday, impacting normal life including some businesses.
Power was cut at approximately 8 am across the two districts including Tura town.
According to Power department officials, a tower line under Nangalbibra substation sustained damage due to a suspected lightning strike during a storm.
The entire region has been experiencing incessant rains for most of the week.
“We received information that a tower line, approximately 39 kms from Nangalbibra towards the Williamnagar side, had a technical failure which led to power cut to the two districts. The restoration works were hampered due to incessant rains during the day. The linesmen perched atop the tower had no option but to continue with the work since the rains kept falling,” informed MeECL CEO, Balnang Sangma.
With the power cut came partial disruption of mobile network connectivity in many areas as most towers operate without a back-up generator due to objection from localities. Power was restored shortly after six in the evening.
