SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has submitted a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, seeking relaxation of the upper age limit for recruitment in government posts.
In the letter, the UDP stated that one of the important matters that came up in the party’s deliberations concerning the people was related to the distress and plight of the unemployed youth.
“Accordingly, a decision was taken to impress upon you and the government of the day to relax the upper age limit for recruitment to government posts in Meghalaya. This is in consonance with the decision taken by different states for age relaxation,” the party stated.
According to UDP, age relaxation would address the issue of unemployment and the growing job-seekers who find it difficult to get selected because of a mismatch between the number of applicants and job vacancies at different levels.
“Besides, this will also ease the mental agony and frustration of the deprived applicants for fear of being overage,” the party said.
It may be mentioned that the UPSC has also relaxed the upper age limit while some Northeastern states have also followed the same principle.
In Meghalaya, in a first of its kind, the Education department had relaxed the upper age limit for ST (scheduled tribes) up to 37 years.
