First privately-run abattoir opens

SHILLONG: State’s first privately-run slaughterhouse at Umphyrnai (Nongdalum) was inaugurated on Monday by Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, East Khasi Hills, DBS Mukhim.
During the inauguration, she exhorted private entrepreneurs to start running a slaughter house as people will have more access to clean and hygienic meat. While also encouraging private slaughter houses, she said cleanliness should be a priority which should not affect the environment such as water bodies.
Appreciating the owner of the slaughterhouse for ensuring all necessary requirements are made in place, she warned against slaughtering of dead or sick animals.
Meanwhile, owner of the slaughterhouse, Batiplang Kharumnuid, said he is looking forward to assistance from the state government and encouraged other interested individuals to also start a slaughter house that should not only be hygienic but also ensure that the environment is kept clean.
At the abattoir, different rooms have been designated such as offals-washing area, skin collection centre, main working area etc.
