SHILLONG: Continuing its opposition to the contentious farm laws, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Saturday organised a state-level farmers’ meet which was attended by former chief minister and Congress leader Mukul Sangma.
Sangma, who graced the occasion, expressed discontentment over Centre’s move and said that even in usual circumstance, farmers are always hit by natural calamities.
“Apart from that, if the farmers are forced to opt out of farming, then hunger and starvation would be a common thing in the society,” he said.
Stating that agriculture is the way of life for the countrymen, Sangma said, “Most of us are directly or indirectly connected to farming, either as farmers or as consumers”.
The meeting, organised to express resentment over the new laws, was attended by office-bearers, MLAs, MDCs, Ex-MLAs, DCCs and BCCs, members and frontal organisations.
The session was chaired by working president, James S Lyngdoh, while MDC and secretary, MPCC, Charles Marngar, proposed the vote of thanks.
