SHILLONG: Adviser & Spokesperson, Federation of Khasi States, John F Kharshiing, has urged the government to augment the internet connectivity in state, especially at the time when online tasks have become indispensable to the masses.
Stating that the COVID-19-induced restrictions may be in place until a vaccine is developed, Kharshiing, in a statement, said that the practice of getting tasks done by online means may be perpetuated.
“We notice that central and state governments have encouraged  the school/college and university authorities to explore conducting their classes via internet,  although well intended the reality is that internet services drop, is practically non-existent and extremely slow the moment one travels outside the city of Shillong,” Kharshiing said.
“The very relevance of internet can be further gauged from the recent decision of the central government to allow use of online verification of driving licenses and vehicle documents which will be shortly applicable in Meghalaya,” he added.
Calling on the elected representatives and the traditional chiefs from the Kur, Shnong, Raid, the Dorbar Hima and the members of the print and electronic media to encourage people to adopt to this new process of communication, Kharshiing has exhorted the state government and Meghalaya Assembly to constitute a special committee to look into the issue of poor internet connectivity in state and thereby, revamp it.
