SHILLONG: The state government is optimistic and also ensuring that it leaves no stones unturned in hosting the National Games 2022 even as the 36th National Games, allotted to Goa (also called Goa 2020), has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Goa 2020 was scheduled for October 20-November 4, 2020.
Notwithstanding the postponement of the Games in Goa, Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, on Thursday, said that a decision on delaying the National Games to 2023 would be taken by the Indian Olympic Association; however, state government wants to host the Games in 2022 as it coincides with the golden jubilee of Meghalaya’s statehood.
Stating that the state government is actively preparing for the National Games, Lyngdoh informed that the construction of the PA Sangma in Tura will begin soon while the tender for the re-development of JN Stadium at Polo, Shillong, will likely be floated by next month.
“We are keen to see that everything is in place before the Games and I don’t see any difficulty in this regard,” Lyngdoh added.
