SHILLONG: Concerned about the unemployment of youths in the state, the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has resolved to take up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
The proposition of the party comes as a result of a situation in state where many returnees, who arrived back to the state due to the pandemic, are now jobless.
“I will take it (unemployment issue) up with chief minister on how to utilise their experiences and accommodate them,” said PDF chief and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh, on Thursday.
As per available statistics, not less than five to six thousand youths have returned to the state abandoning their jobs owing to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. “This issue is serious as many experienced youths in many spheres have returned back to the state,” Lyngdoh said, adding that if the government is unable to utilise their expertise it will be a loss for the state.
He said, “I feel that the government has to intervene as this is an important issue”.
It may be recalled that just days ago, Nongkrem MLA and Chairman of the State Planning Board, Lambor Malngiang, had also expressed concern over the growing unemployment, which was even doubled after returnees were back after the COVID outbreak.
Banking on a Skill Development University as one of the many solutions to the problems, he had expressed fears of many youths picking up arms in frustration if the issue was not addressed.
