Villagers march to KHADC, seek appointment of full-fledged headman
SHILLONG: Residents of Mawpen Village falling under Hima Bhowal, Mawsynram Constituency, marched their way to the KHADC here with placards and a banner on Tuesday demanding the appointment of a full-fledged Rangbah Shnong (headman). The agitated people held up a banner which stated that the residents of Mawpen oppose the selection of the acting headman chosen by the chief of Hima Bhowal without the knowledge of the executive committee and the people. Residents, numbering not more than 100, were not allowed to enter the premises by the Enforcement personnel of the Council but later the Executive Member in charge of Elaka, Jambor War, called five leaders to meet him. In the meet, War assured the people that the matter would be looked into. It was learnt that the Syiem of Hima Bhowal appointed Bikendro Kharbani as the acting headman with effect from March.

Awareness campaign kicks off
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Bharat Scouts & Guides on Tuesday kick-started its awareness campaign week in commemoration of the Annual Foundation Day, 2020. According to a statement, the Annual Foundation Day, 2020, has been thematised on ‘MBSG Fights COVID-19’. During the first day, a route march was flagged off from its state headquarters which ended with a gathering at Khyndai Lad. During the weeklong awareness campaign, which will conclude on November 7, a virtual awareness webinar, a blood donation camp in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya, among others, will also be held.

Corona care centre relocated
NONGPOH: With the gradual reopening of schools in the state, the Ri Bhoi District Administration along with the Health department has decided to relocate the existing corona care centre from St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh, to the Nursing Institute, which is located at Pahamsyiem. The District Medical and Health Officer, Ri Bhoi, has, meanwhile, informed that as of now, the corona care centres in the district include one at State Institute of Rural Development at Nongsder, Conservation Training Institute at Byrnihat and Mahatma Gandhi University, 13th Mile, Byrnihat.

Nongstoin MLA conducts inspection
NONGSTOIN: Nongstoin MLA, Macmillan Byrsat, along with the Assistance Executive Engineer, Urban Affairs department, Nongstoin, R Kurbah, Syiem of Hima Nongstoin EP Syiem among others, conducted spot inspection at Nongstoin market on Tuesday. Speaking with the media persons after the inspection, Byrsat said, “For the past seven or eight months, we had carried out an inspection at Nongstoin market and the proposal for its modification was send to the state government through the Urban Affairs department as the market has no proper drainage, footpath and other facilities”. Byrsat also said the renovation of the market will be started soon.

Operation of weekly markets halted
TURA: The North Garo Hills District Administration has prohibited the operation of weekly markets in the district. In an order, North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner RP Marak has directed all shops and business establishments barring medicine shops/pharmacies to remain closed on weekly market days. The conversion of other days as weekly markets has also been prohibited. However, opening of daily market with adherence to COVID-19 protocols has been allowed.

WGH college principal passes away
TURA: The principal of Durama College, Tura, Jesse K Marak, who has been with the institution since its inception in 1993, passed away here on Monday night after a sudden illness. In a meeting held in the premises of Durama College on Tuesday, the management and staff of Durama College has condoled the untimely demise of its principal.

PWD told to hand over extra land
TURA: After several semi-permanent structures were seen coming up on the extra land along the town’s roads with potential for encroachment, West Garo Hills District Magistrate has directed the authorities of the PWD to temporarily hand over all the extra land to the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) for paid parking place. The directive was issued fearing that if such construction is allowed, more structures are likely to come up along the roadside in the near future and create inconvenience for the general public.
